How to Make CBD Cream?

By popular demand, we continue our ‘How to Make’ series with a much-requested article, how to make CBD cream.

Topical application is a popular use of CBD for a variety of reasons. There are rumoured and suggested health benefits that have seen the cream be used by everyone from famous sportspeople to tattoo artists.

Another reason creams and lotions are a much-used form of CBD is the separation from the stigma of the product. There are still concerns when it comes to the fairly unfair confusion between CBD and THC heavy marijuana, and that makes some uncomfortable with certain forms of CBD, especially vaping the cannabinoid.

Topical application removes these comparisons, and as a result reduces the perceived stigma or potential discomfort that may occur as a result.

So, if you want to use CBD cream, and you’re one of those people who enjoys making your own health products (we feel you, it’s a popular practice in P&H HQ) then let’s have a look at how to make CBD creams.

Recipes and Methods

There’s a bunch of different ways to make CBD creams, some like to take a cream such as arnica, and simply add a few drops of CBD oil to it before applying. This is a fine method, but there are a few others that involve a little more work.

The Shea Butter Method

The shea butter method is the most popular and easiest way to make a good CBD cream or lotion. All you need for this is shea butter (obviously), CBD oil (again, obviously), and then an extra ingredient. CBD is fat-soluble so you need something extra here. Arguably the most popular choice is coconut oil.

To create cream from these ingredients, heat the butter, and then the coconut oil, on a low heat in a bowl inside a pan containing water. Once everything is fully melted, take it off the heat and leave to cool for five minutes, stir in the CBD oil and then leave the formula until it solidifies (no need to refrigerate). Once everything is solid, it’s ready to go.

Alternative Ingredients

There are a bunch of different tweaks and changes that can be made to this formula to create slightly different CBD creams and lotions.

For example, you can exchange shea butter for mango seed butter, or coconut oil for sunflower or grapeseed oil (the latter may not be quite as effective, however).

If you want a neutral flavour, then sunflower oil is probably your best choice, then you can, if you feel the desire, add a few drops of your favourite essential oil, either for a nice smell, or for the plausible health benefits offered by certain oils according to aromatherapy.

It’s something you can experiment with, there’s a bunch of different combinations and we’re sure you can have some ideas of things to switch in for other ingredients.
