Can you Use CBD While Breastfeeding?
We are always careful when it comes to producing these articles, but sometimes you come to answer a question that requires a whole new level of trepidation and care. “Can you use CBD while breastfeeding?”. is definitely one of those questions
Look, we know that this is a sensitive issue, and we want to make it clear from the start that we are not saying any choice is right or wrong for breastfeeding mothers. If you believe in the choices you are making, we are not qualified (or indeed stupid enough) to tell you otherwise.
But this is a question we are often asked, so it is one we have to try and answer here.
Before we start, we are not going to reach a firm conclusion at the end of this article, that is not what we do. Instead, what we are going to do here is collate as much information as we can in one place, to help you make a choice that you are comfortable with.
You’ll hear this a lot during this article, but we’re going to state it here too, if you are considering adding any supplement or product to your diet while breastfeeding, consult your doctor first.
Concerns About CBD and Breastfeeding
Let’s get straight into it then, and discuss the concerns that revolve around CBD and breastfeeding.
Firstly, let’s bust a myth, we love busting myths, it’s our favourite thing to do, and this one is a big one.
CBD does not have the psychoactive properties of THC, so you will not get high by taking CBD, which is, understandably, a big concern for mothers of small children.
The next question is important, will CBD pass through your breast milk? Unfortunately, there is no straight answer to this, science is simply not sure. While there is no risk that anyone is aware of posed to children who consume CBD (in fact, some parents use CBD for their children), it is important to consult a doctor, because there is a chance the CBD will pass through your milk.
Are there Positives to CBD While Breastfeeding?
This is a matter of opinion. Some mothers see the lack of knowledge about CBD to be enough reason to avoid it completely while breastfeeding, and that is obviously fine. However, there is another side. Anecdotal evidence from some mothers claims that CBD can have an impact on post-natal depression. In fact, there is suggestion that CBD may be able to help with many forms of depression.
Some also claim that CBD can increase appetite, and even reduce nausea in some cases, making it easier for breastfeeding mothers to consume the recommended extra calories (around 500) during breastfeeding.
What is for sure, is that an increasing number of women are using CBD products.
Are Natural Cannabinoids a Part of Breastfeeding?
Let’s switch direction a little, and look at something genuinely interesting.
CBD is a phytocannabinoid, as in one derived from plants, but the body also produces cannabinoids naturally in the endocannabinoid system.
Endocannabinoids have been detected in mother’s milk in some instances, suggesting that cannabinoids may have something to do with breast milk being good for babies. This is entirely speculation, we freely admit, but the subject is very interesting, and there is a great deal of information online about it.
Conclusion
We’re not putting an actual conclusion here, as you may have noticed, we have no intention of making a statement one way or the other when it comes to this issue.
There information online for those who are curious about the effects of CBD on breastfeeding mothers, and whether it has an effect on your child. But remember, like with any information to find online, take this with a pinch of salt.
Remember, if you are considering taking CBD for any reason while breastfeeding, consult your doctor about it. As much research as you can do alone, the opinion of a medical professional is vital.
